Shen Congwen as well as his works had aroused attention from many researchers, who conducted thorough studies on Shen and his works from various angles. Despite of all those distinct perspectives, researchers had reached a common recognition that Shen could never cut the intimate connection with his hometown; and his works was always penetrated with deep homesickness. Therefore, this thesis is determined to focus on his civilian attachment, with the basis on Zhou Zuoren’s and Luxun’s theories on it, and to gain a complete mastery of Shen’s civilian attachment. The first chapter is an analysis of the primary cause of Shen’s civilian attachment from his personal experience, individual choices as well as the impact of the religion. As for the second chapter, the author aims to demonstrate Congwen’s civilian attachment from several respects: the types of characters in his work, his appreciation of rural perspective of love instead of urban one, the creation of works with distinct flavor of the western Hunan. Moreover, chapter two would make a lengthy explanation on Border town from the above respects. Chapter three gives an introduction of the inheritance of Shen’s civilian attachment, taking Wang Zengqi and A’cheng as the example to introduce the reason as well as the process of inheriting. Besides, the third chapter would also analyze several writings of Wang and A’Cheng to discover their civilian attachment. All in all, through the profound analysis of Shen’s works, this article helps the reader to recognize that Shen is a distinct author in the Chinese literary history, and his civilian attachment would continue to carry on and carry forward.
