The Musicality Of Shen Congwen’ Works

Shen Congwen is an important writer in china modern literature history, his romantic and poetic works are full of simple and plain style of writing. Especially the fictions with the theme of country life, not only forms the sharp contrast with modern urban life, but also full of thoughts on the philosophy of life. In recent years, along with the gradually deeper study on his works and life, I have been drawing more and more attention on the musical subjects and music elements that used in his works. Based on the study of his work, literature theory and music theory, the emphasis of this paper is to find the effects of music on Shen Congwen’s literature creation and literature thoughts by exploring the origin of Shen Congwen and music, analysis the unique connotation of different music types that appears in his works. Also I want to summary the musicality of Shen Congwen’s works by studying his work, life, and literature theory and music theory.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part of the thesis is Shen Congwen and music. Firstly, this paper will discuss the origin of Shen Congwen and music. Shen Congwen has not received system music education, but the rich intangible cultural heritage and folk music elements gave him the exquisite music experience and unique life experience, which is his first music enlightenment; in many works he wrote his dream and love about music, the vivid description of musical forms and the unique feeling of music elements, which provide an important theoretical basis for the study of the origin of Shen Congwen and music; the music also redemption his soul. Since the foundation of the country, Shen Congwen was insane for a time, he self reflection in the music, and made a miraculous recovery at last. Music not only provided Shen Congwen with writing material and inspiration, but also is a medicine when he confused, Music has an extremely important role in his literature life. Secondly, this paper will discuss music and literature in eyes of Shen Congwen. He thinks life is full of music; music has a supreme position in his heart. He is very sensitive to music, he gained experience in music, and converting them into creative inspiration, music to help the writing, gave him the inspiration and motivation. Shen Congwen not only can turn the music experience expressed in words, and his literature creation also learns music expression. Thirdly, this paper will discuss "Border town" which is the representative works of literature embodied by music technique. In "border town", the music is not only a kind of monotonous expression and not just for rendering color emotion, but also the music elements are integrated into his literary creation, for example in his emotional expression, characterization, context, and even the work structure, we are able to see the existence of music.The second part of the thesis is the musicality of Shen Congwen’s works. Firstly, starting from the common point of literature and music, literary works can learn music in structure, literature and music are both the senses of art, the art of time; secondly, to refute the "Shen Congwen does not understand the music structure". A study on several of Shen Congwen’s works said that he did not understand the music structure. In contrast, Shen Congwen not only loves music, and mentioned several times on the musical elements and musical structure reference in his works. Thirdly, single trilogy structure in Shen Congwen’s works. This article has carried on the thorough analysis on "Bai Zi", a single trilogy structure analysis of this novel, and the formation of structural analysis chart; fourthly, sonata form structure in Shen Congwen’s works. This paper conducted a serious study of the "husband", analysis of the works of thesonata form structure, and the formation of structural analysis chart, the music of Shen Congwen works structure stick out a mile.The third part of the thesis is the use of folk genre. In Shen Congwen’s works, the uses of folk genre are very rich and flexible, such as work songs genre, folk songs genre and minor genre.The fourth part of the thesis is the relationship between political appeal and the music of Shen Congwen. Based on the analysis of Shen Congwen’s "God built" thought and "music to re make politics" thought this paper will discuss the relationship between political appeal and the music of Shen Congwen.Through the above analysis framework, this paper hopes to read and analysis Shen Congwen’s literary works and literary thought in the perspective of music; find and summarize that minority music genre form in Shen Congwen’s works; find the similarities of Shen Congwen’s literary works with the Western musical on form structure; find out the relationship between the political thought of Shen Congwen and the Xiangxi folk music from the content.
