On The Creation Of Shen Congwen’s Novels And Xiangxi Folk Literature

In the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature, Shen Congwen has been considered a first-class writer with world reputation. His classical prose and fiction have obtained consistent approval of scholars home and abroad, and they have also become the hot subject that many researchers have explored continuously. The reason for the world fame in the creation of the novel by Shen Congwen mainly is: In the creative perspective and theme, his novels focused on the lives of the lower class people, and gave them infinite kindness. He praised the beauty of humanity in Xiangxi with respect. and wrote the twisted human nature. In the artistic style, his novels adopted the narrative and lyrical methods, the languages were mainly from Xiangxi folk songs, dialects and proverbs, which made his work emerge with a distinct folk consciousness. The formation of these styles in his novel creation relates to the use of Xiangxi folk literature.The author thinks that the novel creation for Xiangxi folk literature mainly came from his love of homeland and the folk position of consciousness. His infinite compassion and love to the people at the bottom was penetrated in the novel series. So how did he reflect the folk position? How did he absorb folk nutrition? What enlightenment does this have on the creation of contemporary literature? In order to solve these problems, the author starts from the Xiangxi folk literature of the works to do some exploration, in an effort to find the secret of success and give beneficial enlightenment to the contemporary literary creation and research. In this thesis, the author combines the literature theory, the text of the novel, and various oral and written folk literature in Xiangxi, explores the relationship between Xiangxi folk literature and Shen Congwen’s novels creation, and explores the value and significance of Xiangxi folk literature to the success of Shen Congwen’s novels in order to provide inspiration for Chinese contemporary literature creation and research. The structure and content is roughly as follows.The introduction part of the thesis briefly introduces the reasons of this topic, the research situation, and points out the research ideas and methods of this thesis. Chapter 1 introduces the general situation of using Xiangxi folk literature resource in the creation of Shen Congwen’s novels from three aspects of Xiangxi folk stories, Xiangxi folk songs and Xiangxi folk myths.The second chapter discusses Shen Congwen’s writing strategies orientated folk from two aspects: the first is the space-time background of Shen Congwen’s writing of the Xiangxi folk literature, the second is the subjective choice of Shen Congwen’s self-consciousness. Its writing strategy of facing folk is both objective and subjective. The third chapter analyzes the influence of Xiangxi folk literature on the connotation of Shen Congwen’s novels creation. The two major themes in his works are beauty and sadness, which are basically consistent with the theme of Xiangxi folk literature. Shen Congwen praised the beauty of human nature of the hometown with the deep love for the hometown, and then took the native beauty of humanity as the reference, with a pair of eyes in tears contrasting the twisted human nature in social reality. The fourth chapter analyzes the influence of Xiangxi folk literature on creation style of Shen Congwen’s novels. In narration, the narrative content and narrative discourse of the folk literature of Xiangxi are borrowed. In lyricism, the emotion is expressed by the scenery and the unique human customs of Xiangxi. And on the language style, his works adopted more Xiangxi folk songs, Xiangxi dialect and proverbs. The formation of these styles is related to the borrowing of Xiangxi literature in his creation of novel. In the conclusion part, the author intends to explain the significance of the interaction between the creation of Shen Congwen’s novels and the Xiangxi folk literature, hoping to bring some inspiration to the contemporary Chinese literary creation and research.
