An obvious obstacle in Chinese-English translation is the logic difference between thetwo languages. The logic of the former is somehow vague, relying on the context. Thelatter, however is rather clear. So if translators are doing from Chinese to English withoutany idea of logic adaption, they will fail to deliver the original meaning to the fullest extent.Worst of all, they distort the meaning and create their weird English under the influence ofChinese logic, which doesn’t make any sense. The author was very lucky to join in the translation team of The C. Y. Tung Diariesprogram. The Chinese logic finds perfect expression in the diaries. The author has studiedthis aspect carefully and has come up with the idea that translators must know how to copewith the logic difference when they do from Chinese to English. Compared the originaltranslation with the final translation, the author has sorted out those failed attempts and hasworked out a solution to this trouble. Due to obvious differences in expression of logicalrelations in Chinese and English, when translating from Chinese into English, the translatorneeds to work on a process that may be called logical restructuring, which usually involvesthree approaches, namely making the hidden logical relations explicit, straightening, andreorganizing the logical development. Sometimes one needs to work on only one or two ofthe three approaches, and sometimes maybe all three are necessary. This dissertation consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction. The secondpart discusses the logic differences between Chinese and English languages. The third partintroduces The C. Y. Tung Diaries program. The fourth part is given to detailedexplanation of the strategies, including making it explicit, straightening and adjusting. Atthe end of the dissertation, a conclusion is drawn on the basis of the above explanation. The author hopes this dissertation will be helpful if translators find problems in logicadaption from Chinese to English.
