Shuowen Jiezi (hereinafter referred to as the Shuo Wen) which was compiled byXu Shen of Eastern Han Dynasty is the foundation stone of Philology. The scholarswho were doing character research has always been to Shuo Wen for this. From TangDynasty, people continuously based on the Chinese radical to research Chinesemorpheme, gradually formed "the interpretation of the words". The true sense of theChinese morpheme research was about character multiplied, which was begun withZheng Qiao of Southern Song Dynasty. Scholars of Qing Dynasty were still engagedin research in this area, but still regarded Chinese radical as Chinese morpheme.Modern scholars had clearly radical and morpheme were two different concepts, notto be confused. This paper summarizes the achievements and limitations of previousresearch, and then, trying to sort out the differences and relation between radical andmorpheme, and to judge the real Chinese morphemes from radicals. This paper isdivided into four parts.Part one, Introduction. The research status is described and the disadvantages andproblems in the research are pointed out. To expound research significance, researchscope and research method.Part two, research on radical and morpheme. First, analyses the radical definitionand function. Second, put forward the definition of morpheme, analyses therelationship of morpheme and Chinese characters structure. Finally, on the basis of theprevious text, sum up both distinction and connection.Part three, research on morpheme of Shuo Wen. On the basis of structure type ofChinese characters, establish the standard of judging morpheme. And put in the XiaoZhuan in the practice of judgment. For the identified morphemes, according to thedifferent attribute divides them into the original morpheme, differentiated morphemeand special morpheme.Part four, research on comparison of morpheme in Xiao Zhuan, oracle boneinscriptions and bronze inscriptions. Compare their basic characteristics and explorebetween them of inheritance and development.
