Spatial Form And Spatial Narrative In The Good Soldier

Generally acknowledged as one of the forerunners of modernist literature, FordMadox Ford devoted his whole life in the innovation of the writing techniques of novel andwas considered to have created the impressionism fiction together with Joseph Conrad. Hismasterpiece Parade’s End and his widely read novel The Good Soldier embody theendeavors he has made in reforming fiction narrative. The thesis tries to appreciate theachievement The Good Soldier has made in innovative narrative from the perspective ofspatial form and spatial narrative, and at the same time, tries to clarify the connection anddifferentiation between spatial form and spatial narrative based on the researches done byChinese and foreign scholars.The thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction which includesthe literature review on The Good Soldier and a brief introduction to relation between thetime factor and the space factor in literature. The second part is the first chapter in whichthe research done by Chinese and foreign scholars in spatial form and spatial narrative isbriefly introduced and the connection and differentiation between spatial form and spatialnarrative is analyzed. The third part is the second chapter which analyzes how spatial formis achieved in The Good Soldier through juxtaposition, multiple-story, and repetition ofimage and plot. The fourth part is the third chapter which analyzes the text of The GoodSoldier from the perspective of spatial narrative. Spatialized situation and the function ofspace in The Good Soldier are discussed. The last part, conclusion, makes a summary ofthe whole thesis.Narrative study done by scholars home and abroad in the past on The Good Soldierwas mainly from the perspective of narrative time and unreliable narration, rarely from theperspective of spatial form and spatial narrative. The thesis tries to fill the vacancy for TheGood Soldier, a modernist classic.
