Fluency in interpreting is undoubtedly an important indicator of the quality ofinterpretation. Much research has already been done into the influence of pauses ininterpretation on fluency. Pauses are generally divided into silent and voiced. However,some pauses will actually help improve the quality of interpretation. Therefore, this thesisdivides pauses into proper pauses and improper pauses; the latter then further divided intosilent improper pauses and voiced improper pauses. The advantages of proper pauses andthe disadvantages of improper pauses in interpretation will be illustrated through positivepauses and negative pauses in speeches. It will then be pointed out that while interpreting,an interpreter should spare no efforts to keep the positive pauses of a speaker but to removethe negative ones, which will help improve the quality of interpretation. Analysis will thenbe made into all the silent improper pauses and voiced improper pauses in an interpretationtask done by this author and solutions will be provided according to the reasons behindthem.
