Improper Pauses In Korean To Chinese Consecutive Interpreting And The Coping Strategies

Pauses happen from time to time in the process of consecutive interpreting.Proper pauses are good for communication and better convey the meaning of the speaker,however,improper pauses are not conducive to the transmission of information.Therefore,interpreters should pay attention to avoid improper pauses.This thesis is a case study based on the author's Korean-Chinese consecutive interpretation of the mock conference entitled "Cultural Exchange as Communication and Understanding of Korean Culture".By introducing improper pauses during the interpreting of the mock conference,this thesis will discuss the reasons of improper pauses and the coping strategies.In this paper,improper pauses can be divided into silent improper pauses and filled improper pauses such as “um”,“uh”.In terms of causes,the problems mainly occurred in the following areas: listening and comprehension,note-taking,bilingual translation of expressions,translator's own language habits and short-term memory.Accordingly,coping strategies of improper pauses are listed as: enriching interpretation practice corpus,doing more deverbalization practice,doing more public speaking practice,and training on retelling without notes,etc.Hopefully,this thesis can help other interpreters to reduce improper pauses.
