The Causes Of Improper Pauses In Chinese-Toenglish Consecutive Interpreting And The Coping Strategies

Improper pauses in consecutive interpreting affect the information integrity and fluency of the target language,and impede target audience's understanding,which should be avoided and overcome.This thesis is a case study based on the author's consecutive interpretation of the mock conference of “2019 China(Shenzhen)IT Summit”.By transliterating the source language and target language transcripts,15 typical cases are analyzed so as to explore the forms and causes of improper pauses,and coping strategies are proposed.Based on predecessors' studies and the author's practical experience,the definition and classification of improper pauses are presented,and the reasons of improper pauses are summarized as follows: listening and comprehension difficulties,inefficient notetaking,and language expression disfluency.Accordingly,coping strategies of improper pauses are listed as follows: expanding the scope of interpretation preparation,improving active listening and discerning abilities,developing the note-taking system and training language expressions.It is hoped that this study will be instructive for learners of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting who will encounter same problems in the future.
