Fluency is a substantial standard in interpreting field and one of the key factors to evaluate the quality of interpreting.Improper pause is one of the major forms of disfluency. Therefore, interpreters should pay attention to such problem and manage to overcome it.This thesis is a case study based on author's consecutive interpretation from Spanish into Chinese of the Eighth Summit of the Americas Mock Forum.By building a bilingual corpus comprised of transcripts of the source language and the interpretation, the thesis mainly explores the forms and the causes of improper pauses, and intends to offer useful strategies according to different situations in order to reduce improper pauses.Through study and research, the definition and the classification of improper pauses are presented and various reasons attributed to improper pauses are summarized. The disfluency can be divided into two forms, silent improper pauses and filled improper pauses. There are three main causes, the listening comprehension, the note-taking skills and the expression ability.Accordingly, strategies can be used to prevent or at least reduce improper pauses in consecutive interpreting, such as specialized listening skills, retelling and summary training, sentence pattern transformation,as well as glossary building and paraphrasing.
