With the acceleration of urbanization, the young rural migrant workers areincreasing especially the number of the rural empty nester. At present our rural emptynester’s mental health status is not optimistic in China and studies have shown thatsocial support is an important variable affecting mental health. Therefore, research onrural empty nester’s social support status and ways to intervene in social support topromote their mental health is very necessary. The purpose of this study is tounderstand rural empty nester’s social support status through a questionnaire surveyand by the theory of the social support we can find out the rural empty nester’spsychological problems, which can explore the basic path of the rural empty nester’ssocial support though the old social work.The study of using social support rating scale and GHQ-12psychometric scale ofHenan province Pingdingshan Yexian County in426rural empty nesters isinvestigated. The application of SPSS17.0in data analysis mainly uses the mean andcorrelation analysis to understand the rural empty nester social’s support status and itsimpact on mental health. This paper discusses the feasibility of the rural emptynester’s social support though the social work for the elderly, on the basis of theoryshows that the intervention in rural empty nester’s social support can improve theirmental health by an example of an elderly case and summarizes the elderly case work,group work and old aged community work on rural empty nester’s social supportintervention pattern. There are the main conclusions of this research. First of all,blood as a link to the network is the main source of the rural empty nester’s socialsupport, followed by friends and neighbors. The support of use in rural empty nesteris relatively low. Second, rural empty nester’s subjective support, objective supportand utilization of support and psychological problems of12factors are negativelycorrelated, that is to say the more social support, the fewer psychological problemsand the higher mental health status. Last but not the least, the social work for elderscould influence the rural empty nester’s social support and promote theirpsychological health.
