As a New Sensation School writer, Mu Shi Ying was active in modern Shanghaiin1920-1930s. Although he only lived through28years, he left us a lot of uniquestories which were put in to four collections,"the north and south poles ","cemetery","the holy virgin feelings","platinum female body statue" and other novels publishedin somewhere else. All of these make him known as “Excellent Writer of Proletarianliterature” and “giant of novels of New Sensation School”. And some studies ofresearchers have mentioned the loneliness presented in Mu Shi Ying’s work, howeverthey didn’t go further on detailed analysis. In this thesis, I focus on the loneliness showed in Mu Shi Ying’s works, studythree aspects about the loneliness: what’s the loneliness, how it came from and thesignificance to modern literature. The first chapter is introduction, mainly to discuss why I do research ofloneliness in Mu Shi Ying’s works, to review the total research about Mu Shi Ying.Since the1930s, a lot comments on Mu Shi Ying were from other writers and criticsbecause of his two completely different writing style and special writing skills of newsensation school. Until the1980s, Chinese Literary field were back to active and thestudy of Mu Shi Ying grew to vitality. Most Mu Shi Ying researches mainly focus onhis New Sensation writing skills, characteristics of urban culture and the spiritanalysis of his novels’ characters. The second chapter based on reading texts, mainly talks about the loneliness hepresented in three aspects—homeless feeling, emotional emptiness and the diaphragmof spirit. Otherwise, try to compare with other two new sensation school writers LiuNa Ou and Shi Zhe Cun on the way they showed loneliness in their novels to see thedepth of Mu Shi Ying’s works In chapter three, I analyze the reasons of loneliness in his creation. One is hisown life experience which both came from his childhood happiness and loses, adultdrifted lonely life in Shanghai. The second reason is based on the heaven and hellpoles development in Shanghai Society, which is related to the lonely experience inurban life. These two reasons deeply penetrate Mu Shi Ying’s individual soul, and MuShi Ying is a sensitive person with strong ability to imitate. No matter proletariannovel of new sensation works, he can show the modern people’s loneliness feeling inright place. Finally, the fourth chapter about meanings of loneliness, I use Liu Zai Fu’s fourdimensions of literature theory to find Mu Shi Ying’s loneliness’ contribution andsignificance to the Chinese modern literature, find strong points in the “national;social; history” and “has its” two dimensions with its significance to the modernliterature, weak points of his works especially in religious dimension about his failedsublimation of his personal survival experience. After feeling lonely and loses ofmodern people, we figure out that Mu Shi Ying has learned the modern’s lost problemand he also tried to pursue self-exist. And it is a pity that he didn’t solve the problemat last.
