| Metonymy in Chinese is a language phenomena which closely related to Chinese culture.The important background knowledge of metonymy is socio-cultural environment. Becauseof this, learning metonymy meaning of words becomes a very difficult part for the studentswho learning Chinese as a second language. Using dictionary is one way of students learnChinese vocabulary. So the explanations of metonymy meaning in dictionary have a bigimpact of learning this kind word. But now we don’t have many study of metonymy meaningof words in dictionary. Based on this situation, this paper will do a comparative study ofmetonymy meaning between The Commercial Press Learner’s Dictionary Of ContemporaryChinese and The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary, analysis advantages and disadvantagesof definitions of metonymy meaning in The Commercial Press Learner’s Dictionary OfContemporary Chinese in order to get a more reasonable and scientific definition way for thepeople who learning Chinese as a second language.The first chapter talks about existing research outcomes and shortcomings. How toeffectively deal with metonymy meaning of words in Chinese dictionary which used byforeign people we don’t have enough study now.The second chapter introduces the basic situation of two dictionaries; include the numberof metonymy meaning and the character. Then compares the metonymy meaning in twodictionaries. Then summarizes the similarities and differences and find causes of these points.The third chapter processes the similarities and differences and gets some characters ofmetonymy meaning in The Commercial Press Learner’s Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese,then analyzes advantages and disadvantages in this dictionary.
