On Translation Of Humor In The Sitcom The Big Bang Theory In Light Of Text Typology

The Big Bang Theory, an American science sitcom with humorous and interestingscript, is widely welcomed by the young viewers in China since its introduction via theInternet. Until now, most studies on the sitcom have been focused on its literature andartistic values and seldom have been carried out on the translation of the humor in it. Sothere’s still much that can be researched in the future.The sitcom has been translated into many versions by different script translationteams, which employed different translation strategies in the translation of the humor, thusresulting the difference in humorous effects. Under the theoretical framework of texttypology, the thesis studies the translation of humor in the sitcom The Big Bang Theoryand analyzes various translation strategies adopted by those teams. The first chapterintroduces the background and issue to be studied, gives a brief summary of the study onthe sitcom in China, and then proceeds to elaborate on the value of the research. Thesecond chapter mainly dwells upon the humorous characteristics of the language in thesitcom. In the third chapter, it studies the translation of humor in the sitcom and analyzesthe various methods using in translation by the script translation teams. In the fourthchapter, it conducts a statistical study of the translation strategies used by the scripttranslation teams and also explains the reason behind the strategies and how it will affectthe communication of humorous effects.
