The fast development gained by corpus linguistics since1990has provided a usefulmethod for translation studies to find universal laws and rules. Mona Baker was the firstscholar who sensed the value of corpus linguistics to translation studies and broughtforward several translation universal features hypotheses. Among these hypotheses, explicitation has received the broadest attention. As a translation universal feature, explicitation means the translation tend to show a marked rise in the level of explicitnesswhen compared to source texts and to original texts in general. According to the differentcomparison mode, explicitation can be categorized into inter-language explicitation andintra-language explictation. Having carefully studied researches which aimed to testinter-language explicitation hypothesis in C-E and E-C, this paper found these researcheshave the following problems: a, the selection of text typology is quite limited, relyingmostly on literature works; b, the methodology that most researches applied wasproblematic. In view of this, this paper selected the genre of diplomatic speech to test ifinter-language explicitation in conjunction exists in the translation of this genre, byinvestigating conjunctive explicitation and implicitation in E-C and C-E translation process. If inter-language explicitation did exist, this paper also aims to find out the differencesbetween the explicitation feature of Chinese translated texts and the explicitation feature ofEnglish translated texts. After comparing the numbers and frequency of conjunctive explicitation andimplicitation in C-E and E-C translation process, the papers finds the diplomatic speechtranslations shows an inter-language explicitation features in conjunction in both C-E andE-C translation direction; moreover, the explicitation feature in English translations ismore obvious than in Chinese translations. These observations serve to deepen ourunderstanding of the explicitation as one of the translation universal features.
