The Film Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Semantic&Communicative Translation

With the increasing globalization,the multimedia industry develops rapidly under the global cultural integration and fast development of information and technology.Therefore,movies,as a crucial means for cultural publicity,have held its key to cultural exchange.In recent years,Chinese films have got a breakthrough in the international market while foreign films are introduced into China Film translation hence becomes increasingly important due to its value in providing access for foreign audiences to Chinese culture and further understanding of it Film translation,different from traditional literary translation,has developed fast during its short history.Compared with its development in the West,China's subtitle translation still has a long way to go since it starts relatively late.Under the theoretical framework of semantic translation and communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark,a distinguished British theorist in translation field,the author takes a Chinese movie,Song of The Phoenix as the research data.Three principles,namely accuracy,concision and instant readability in subtitle translation under the above two theories are also presented.Meanwhile,the thesis focuses on the analysis of translation strategies applied in the subtitling.They are transliteration,literal translation from the perspective of semantic translation,and replacement,adding,reduction and adapting from the perspective of the latter theory.So the author figures out a good translator should always keep in mind that he should combine the two theories in translation instead of separating them completely,otherwise,it will affect the quality of his translation.Lastly,the author hopes that this work will be a reference of certain importance for further researches in subtitle translation from Chinese into English.
