In modern society, it is known to all that English is very important, while oral English is more important for college students. So how to improve students’spoken English, and how to give students good oral English courses have become important tasks for college English teachers. In recent years, there is little change in oral English teaching. Basically, we are still confined in the circle of teacher-centerd teaching model. An important task in oral English teaching is to change the teaching mode, and adopt a more suitable teaching model that can meet students’needs. Therefore, the author presented a students-centered and teacher-guided oral English teaching model according to students’needs in higher vocational colleges. Then the author did an empirical research; the empirical research studies the new teaching model and mainly tries to find whether the students-centered teaching model can meet students’needs and whether it can improve students’oral English ability. Chapter four is about methodology, it introduces research questions, procedures and two instruments of the research, a questionnaire and an English test paper. The questionnaire tries to find out whether the new teaching model can meet students’needs, while the English test paper aims to find the change of students’oral English ability. The research subjects are students in two classes majoring in Tourism Management in a vocational college,49and54students respectively. Two research methodologies are applied in the empirical research: qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. In Chapter five, after a year’s experiment, the study proved that the new teaching model can meet vocational college students’needs and it is more popular among college students; it can improve students’oral English ability, such as fluency, accuracy and more information they can express in certain time than before; so the study can play certain guiding role in practical teaching. The research proves that the "students-centered" teaching model is more suitable for students in higher vocational colleges, it can mobilize students" enthusiasm in learning and meet students’needs.
