There has been much research on the modern similar Chinese characters inrecent twenty years, including ontology research and applied research. The researchhas explored the definition, the reasons of forming, the type and the recognization ofthe similar Chinese characters. However, there haven’t been many detailed statisticsabout the commonly used similar characters, and the scientific suggestions to the fieldof teaching Chinese as foreign language are also rare.The modern normal Chinese characters are the concept of teaching Chinesecharacters for both foreigners and Chinese. On the basis of the former surveys, thepaper chooses3500normal characters as the research object, uses configurationstheory of modern Chinese characters and some methods such as combination oftheories and practice, analysis of the characters table and survey testing, comparisonof Chinese as the first languages and the second languages. The paper analyses thetypes and the reasons of forming Chinese similar characters, according the surveys ofsimilar characters mistakes between Chinese pupils and foreign students, the paperputs forward some suggestions to the teaching of similar Chinese characters.Except the introduction and the conclusion, the paper consists of four parts: thefirst part is the statistics and classification of similar Chinese characters in the table offrequently used modern Chinese characters. Firstly confirms the standard of thesimilar characters, and then divides3500frequently used characters into the strokepart and the component part. The recognization of stroke similar Chinese charactersrefers to the stroke feature, the stroke count, the stroke relationship and the strokeposition. The survey result is74pairs stroke similar characters. The componentsimilar Chinese characters is surveyed according to the shape of the similar characterscomponent, the component position and the component count,215pairs componentsimilar characters. On the basis of298pairs similar characters, the second partexplores the reasons of the emerge of similar Chinese characters, including themethod of character-formation, the development of Chinese characters and themodern simplification. The third part is to compare the similar characters mistakeswhich are made by Chinese pupils and foreign students, they have the similarregulations in the process of recognizing characters-from the pronunciation to themeanings of characters, but they have differences in Chinese foundation, study goaland objective reality. The forth part puts forward to reasonable teaching suggestionsfrom the prospect of teachers, students and textbooks. The teachers should make fulluse of the teaching method, such as characters motivations, context teaching andgeneralization teaching, the students should make use of generalization strategy,stroke strategy, pronunciation and meaning strategy to memorize the similar Chinesecharacters, the text books could arrange the beginning time of teaching similar characters and the practice in the books.3500frequently used Chinese characters has the high appearance rate in ourdaily life, the classification of3500characters has practical values of using Chinesecharacters and improving the communicative ability for both Chinese students andforeign students. Meanwhile, the mature method of teaching similar characters inChinese elementary school can provide the basis for teaching foreign students andpromote the ability of recognizing Chinese characters.
