The Ways Of Studying Chinese Characters Used By Missionaries In Ming And.Qing Dynasties And Its Enlightenment To Modern Chinese Character Teaching

Out of the mission,the missionaries in Ming and Qing Dynasties made various explorations in the process of learning and researching into Chinese characters.On the one hand,they combined the “six categories of Chinese characters” and Chinese traditional methods of practicing Chinese characters in the way of local Chinese,to make a preliminary perception and memorization of Chinese characters and try to summarize the rules of Chinese character memorization.On the other hand,they transformed the sound,shape,and meaning of Chinese characters and internalized the characteristics into their own native language to improve the efficiency of Chinese character recognition.Firstly,according to different research backgrounds and learning levels,this thesis divides the missionaries' Chinese character study into three stages: 16-17 th century,18 th century,and 19 th century.Through the study of Chinese character study methods of seven missionaries in three periods,the study methods of Chinese characters of missionaries are summarized,including picture method,image-positioning method,hidden method,and Chinese character formation method(stroke-component formation method,radical literacy method),from the overall representation to the segmentation of parts,missionaries gradually focused their research on the simplest and most direct form and meaning units.Secondly,the thesis applies the "stroke-component character construction method" and "the hidden method" in teaching,and analyzes the teaching effect based on classroom observation and studentinterviews.Finally,combining the characteristics of Chinese character study and teaching practice of the missionaries in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,from the two aspects of "teaching" and "learning",put forward some suggestions and thinking for foreign Chinese character teaching.
