With remarkable research achievements, most of past business English studies feature copying relevant theories of western countries, not taking national situation into account. Especially, no special study on the Comprehensive Course of Business English Major in higher vocational colleges has been conducted. Moreover, most of researchers have employed one single method to conduct their studies, few using integrated approach. Accordingly, an integrated research approach "LCTV"(Language-Content-Task-Vocation), which integrates CBI (Content-Based Instruction), TBT (Task-Based-Teaching) and professional teaching, was proposed in this paper and employed to study the Comprehensive Course of Business English Major in higher vocational colleges, based on redefining Business English Major in higher vocational colleges and its Comprehensive Course.This empirical study was designed to investigate the effects of LCTV on students’ professional ability. Specifically, it examined whether the LCTV approach can suit the teaching practice of Business English Major in higher vocational colleges, and whether it can help students improve themselves both in language and business. In addition, this paper tried to find the problems and possible solutions.The study lasts about3years continually, and employs a pre-test, a business imitation operation test, two questionnaires and two interviews. The subjects in the present study are all freshmen in C3, the CC(Controlled Class) and C4, the EC(Experimental Class), of Business English Major in Hunan Vocational College of Commerce, each class50students.The SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version13.0) is used as a statistical analytical instrument.Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis, three conclusions are generated:(1)In the pre-test and the1st questionnaire, the subjects’mastery of English language is not satisfactory, they don’t know any international business knowledge and skills at all, and they show no difference. But after one-year experiment, the students of EC made rapid progress. They adequately master basic international business knowledge and skills, and can achieve business goals by employing proper business English language under the guidance of business strategies.2) Measured against the professional ability system and nor for Business English Major, which is developed by the writer, the performance of the EC in comprehensive professional ability and cross-culture business English pragmatic ability in the international business imitation test is much better than that of the CC3) The subject students’ on-the-job feedback evidences that professional ability and oral English ability LCTV focuses on are exactly what they long to improve. What’s more, students’ complaint about the impracticality of school teaching is also exactly what LCTV is aimed to handle. So, it indicates that LCTV is on the right way.Accordingly, it turns out that LCTV is suitable for the teaching practice of Business English Major in higher vocational colleges, and more importantly it can help students improve their comprehensive professional ability. In addition, some constructive suggestions are also offered in this paper.
