In the book "Guang Yi Zhou Shuang Ji", Kang You Wei said that when early scholars discussed Calligraphy works, they based it on the momentum of the characters. Momentum is an important aspect in the art of Calligraphy. There are two forms of this momentum, namely, writing and appearance. The momentum of writing consists of the execution of the dots and strokes in the air. Appearance is the actual form of the characters and is a consequence of the left and right structure of the characters. Calligraphy is an art that encompasses time and space, hence calligraphic writing and appearance of strokes are closely related and inseparable. This research work uses examples from a Tang calligrapher, Huai Su’s Cao Shu (Cursive Script),"Ku Sun Tie" and "Lun Shu Tie", to make an in-depth study of his strokes. For "Ku Sun Tie", the study focused on the dots and strokes and for "Lun Shu Tie", it focused on the action of "cut" and "bend" of the strokes which led to the thickness and point of turn of the strokes etc. In addition to the above works of Huai Su, a large number of visual prints were also used from his "Zi Shu Tie" to analyse the structure and layout; symmetry and space; as well as the strength of the strokes. In conclusion, the research on the momentum of writing and appearance of modern Cao Shu has a significant impact on the creative aspect of the script. It’s strong emphasis on the problem of writing and appearance could play an important part in future creative works in Cao Shu.
