The system of rites and music in the Western Zhou Dynasty has an important position in the history of Chinese culture. It also has a profound inference on the3000-years-later Chinese society and culture. According to rules set in the Western Zhou Dynasty, Kingdom of Lu can share the Zhou Dynasty’s ceremony of offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors, ancestral temple of a ruling house and ritual and music. During the Spring and Autumn Period, all rites of the Zhou Dynasty could be found in Lu. Kingdom of Qi was also famous for its system of rites and music. Confucius used to hear the Shao music in Qi and forget the taste of meat for three months. All these reflect the worship for the system of rites and music in Qi and Lu. The chime, as one national jewels for rites and music, is the embodiment of the system of the Zhou Dynasty. Seen from the current objects discovered in archaeological researches, over347chimes which belong to the Eastern and Western Zhou Dynasty in Shandong area have been found. However, researches about chimes of western and eastern Zhou Dynasty are still incomplete because of the limitation of topics, related materials, or the lack of research methods. The musical archaeology, as an interdiscipline, should combine theories and study methods of archaeology and musicology well, thus to outstand its superiority. In order to study about chime’s grain shape, sound column structure, tonality, and compilation and so on and so forth, current writer chose the article of "chime research of the Zhou Dynasty in Shandong" to combine archaeological typology, tonality, musical acoustics and philology together, in other words, to use research methods of musicology and archaeology to study about the Zhou Dynasty’chimes found in Shandong. This kind of research can make a deep analysis of features of the Zhou Dynasty’s chimes culture in Shandong, discover rules of its development, and thus make a great sense to researches about Chinese bronze music clock’s division of history into periods, comprehensive and systematical analysis of chime culture of the Zhou Dynasty, and studies about the system of rites and music in the Zhou Dynasty and musical culture in Qi and Lu. Meanwhile, it also has some instructive significance to the actual archaeological excavations and organizing work.
