An Analysis Of Futiy Information Rendering In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

The use of fuzzy information is unavoidable in human communication and it can increasethe flexibility of language and achieve some special communicative effects so that thequality of communication will be improved. Fuzzy information is also widely used inconsecutive interpreting. However, the interpreters often ignore the interpreting of fuzzyinformation, which will probably lead to the reduction of communicative quality, even tofailure in communication. Therefore, the author of this thesis believes it is necessary tostudy the rendering of fuzzy information in consecutive interpreting and the correctinterpreting of fuzzy information can bring the quality of consecutive interpreting to a newlevel.This paper aims at processing the fuzzy information in consecutive interpreting from theperspective of relevance theory, analyzing the fuzzy information interpreting under theguidance of relevance theory and the ways to gain optimal relevance through contextualassumptions. The interpreter should convey the speaker’s informative and communicativeintentions to the hearer and make the speaker’s intentions and the listener’s expectationsmeet, so that the listener could get the maximum relevant effects with minimum efforts.Dealing well with the fuzzy information in consecutive interpreting, the failure ofcommunication can be avoided and the quality of communication can be improved.In relevance theory, communication is seen as an ostensive-inferential process, thelistener will catch and infer the stimulus which is sent by the speaker and find the optimalrelevance in order to understand the meaning of the utterance. In consecutive interpreting,there are two ostensive-inferential processes. In the first process, the interpreter infers theintentions of the speaker. In the second, the interpreter conveys the speaker’s intentions tothe listener in target language.The interpreting of fuzzy information in consecutive interpreting is also anostensive-inferential process. Through the introduction of fuzzy information, this papermakes the reader know more about the fuzzy information in human communication anddivides the consecutive interpreting process into two processes of source language interpreting and target language production. On this basis, this paper analyzes theinterpreting process of fuzzy information in consecutive interpreting in the framework ofrelevance theory, emphasizing the role of the interpreter and context. As to the problem infuzzy information interpreting, under the guidance of relevance theory, this paper proposesthree ways to gain optimal relevance through contextual assumption, and that is theinterpreter can get optimal relevance through his encyclopedic knowledge and logicthinking and the previous information in the utterance. This paper aims at providing someinspirations for the interpreters.
