Duan Yucai’s "Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" With Exegesis Of The Shijing

Duan Yucai was not only the famous scribes, but also an outstanding linguist. He had a very important position in Chinese exegesis history. Duan Yucai made a deep research on "the Shijing" exegesis. In all his writings,"the Shijing Xiaoxue""the Maoshi Guxunzhuan Dingben Xiaojian" and "the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" could represent his exegetical achievements on "the Shijing"."the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" has a very close connection with "the Shijing" exegesis. On one hand,"the Shijing" exegesis is the most important material which "the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" cited. There are three purposes that "the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" cited "the Shijing" exegesis:Firstly, to use "the Shijing" exegesis to prove the original meaning of the word, and according to "the Shijing "exegesis to correct the mistaken of the original meaning which "the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" have gave. Secondly, to use "the Shijing" exegesis to prove extended meaning, including single extend and repeatedly extend Thirdly, to use "the Shijing" exegesis to prove the meaning of interchangeability of words,including one meaning of interchangeability of words and more meaning of interchangeability of words. On the other hand,"the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" give many wonderful insights in "the Shijing" exegesis, and have made great achievements."The Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" relates to "the Shijing" exegesis four aspects:firstly, to explain the meaning of the word of "the Shijing"; secondly, to reveal interchangeability of words of "the Shijing"; thirdly, to explain the name of the things of "the Shijing"; the fourth, to correct the corruption of "the Shijing"."The Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" have made many breakthroughs in "the Shijing" exegesis, and many later scholars have adoptde his achievements.At the same time," the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu " has also some shortcomings in " the Shijing" exegesis. Firstly, there are some problems on explaining the meaning of the word of "the Shiing", expressed as inaccurate Interpretation, do not distinguishing between extended meaning and meaning of interchangeability of words. Secondly, there are deficiencies on revealing the "Shijing" interchangeability of words, expressed as using interchangeability where do not have to, indicating two original words for the same homophone.In short, outweighed the bad ones,we think the achievements of "theShuowen Jiezi Zhu" are the main, the deficiencies are secondary, and "the Shuowen Jiezi Zhu" have pushed "the Shijing" exegesis one step further.
