Whistler was a maverick artist. He was linked to many artists and art schools, but he did not belong toany faction. Whistler had a spirit of rigorous art attitude and a persistent pursuit of arts. He wasstrong-willed, rich life experiences, active and independent thinking. He paid attention to the performanceof color and tone painting, pursuing the painting of" musical "expression. In art ideologically, he advocatedan art philosophy and aestheticism of "the only pursuit of arts, not for others".Whistler, who was one of the Japanese arts, spreading transmission style pioneers. Stemmed fromWhistler’s exploration of Japanese Ukiyo-e, it established a kind of aesthetic thought. After Contacting toJapan Ukiyo-e, he gradually broke away from the influence of Courbet realism and began to explore theuse of plain language of painting, the pursuit of the screen. He got inspiration from the Ukiyo-e prints andabsorbed things which were matching his artistic temperament. This was not a simple imitation, but it was akind of spirit: Integration, reference and innovation. Finally, we discuss his value on the development ofWestern art.We discuss this question through Whistler’s art environment life, his historical background, and talkabout the Japan Wind which impact Whistler ‘s art creation and his change of thinking.We talk thisdeparture from his works, using a lot of text and image analysis compared with Japanese Ukiyo thatinfluence his choice of theme, expression,painting the formation and use of the language. Finally, wediscuss his value on the development of Western art. Applied to the art of the mid-19th century, most of theartistic vanguard had been influenced by the Japan Ukiyo-e, but some artists had a different understandingand learning from the majority artists.They didn’t follow the crowd and selected their own artistic creationand carry it on, Whistler was one of the more unique artists, and that is the reason why we select Whistleras the object of study. His grasp of Japanese Ukiyo-e essence making him so successfully that formed hisown unique artistic style, appearing in the European modern art’s turning point, he also played a certainrole in the process of modern European painting. The collision of combining Eastern and Western artsmake him pursue his own original arts---a painting master’s pursuit of aestheticism and open a modernarts road.
