Christianity is one of the world’s three major religions. In the history of Christianity,it was introduced to China4time. The true sense of the cultural exchange between Chinaand the West began in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which was introduced by the Jesuit.Ricci laid the theoretical and practical foundations of missionary work in China in thelate Ming, and the other missionary followed his principle and preached in early Qing. InKangxi, as a special group,western missionaries not only shoulder the mission ofreligious communication, but also the messenger of cultural exchange. But we shoulddialectically view them and their impact. We can summarize a lot of experience aboutforeign communication and learn the attitude towards the exchange in science andtechnology, culture and other fields from the missionaries at that time. It also has animportant significance for today’s China which is living in a complex internationalenvironment. This paper discusses the western missionary in Kangxi Period. It willresearch the role of missionary who played in the communication between China and theWest by analyzing their activities in China, for example, science and technologyactivities, art activities, diplomatic activities and process manufacturing activities. It alsowill be concerned about how the missionaries impacted Kangxi and many aspects in theChinese society.The first part discusses the missionaries before Kangxi period, the situation ofCatholicism in China, as well as international and domestic background of themissionaries. It also describes the activities of missionaries in China before the Kangxiby setting Schall as an example.The second part focuses on the missionaries of the Kangxi, including the number ofmissionaries, distribution, church organizations they belong to. It analyze activitieswhich missionaries involved in Kangxi, such as the making astronomical calendar andmap mapping, pharmaceutical developing and manufacturing, involving in foreign affairsbetween China and Russia, introducing the West and western art, and preaching in thepalace.The third part discusses the reason Kangxi change the attitude toward the missionaries, Catholic and the West in different periods, as well as different socialclasses’ awareness and attitudes towards the missionaries and the Catholic.The fourth part is a two-way analysis from the perspective of culturalcommunication about missionaries and their impact in Kangxi. Make an objectiveanalysis and evaluation on the cultural communication and its significance in this period.
