On Conception Of Function Words In Ci Quan

Yang Shuda’s Ci Quan is the first monograph that studies function words from grammarperspective, it is significant to classify function words class and compile dictionary offunction words. Yang Shuda’s profound conception on function words and scientific researchmethod are worth to be studied by us. The thesis explores his idea and research method byanalyzing and contrasting function words in Ci Quan to provide reference for study of theancient Chinese function words and function words lexicography.The paper mainly consists of three parts: the first chapter introduces the author and CiQuan. First of all, the chapter proves the author’s life to define the creation process andbackground of Ci Quan. Secondly, it outlines word-collection and stylistic rules of Ci Quan.Ci Quan contains469entries, and lists in alphabetical order. It firstly identifies the class offunction words, then interprets lexical meaning, finally illustrate by examples.The second chapter studies the conception of function words. According to Yang Shuda’sclassification principle, this chapter is divided into adverb、preposition、 conjunction、pronoun、auxiliary verb and interjection. It analyses and contrasts the sample to exploreauthor’s research method on function words. Depending on different gender, the authoremploys different annotation method, for example, it points out syntax position, or indicatespronunciation and the use condition of lexical meaning, or cites the literature. These methodsplay important role in further function words lexicography.The third chapter is summarization and review on the article. This chapter makes somegenerations on features of function words in Ci Quan. Then, this chapter reveals the author’sintegrated conception from the angle of semantics、 pragmatics and syntax to showcomprehensiveness、systematization and scientificity of Yang Shuda’s analysis.Finally, this chapter gives an objective appraisal of deficiency of Ci Quan. Ci Quan getsrid of imitation in initial research of Chinese grammar and develops unique grammar systemrelating to Chinese own characteristic to play an important role in the study history of theancient Chinese function words.
