Letter-words play a certain role in the teaching of Chinese to foreigners as a part of newwords, with the promotion of teaching materials and the increased demand of vocabularies;we find that the present letter-words in the teaching materials of Chinese to foreigners cannotsatisfy the request of learners. We subject the letter-words of latest30years in the teachingmaterials of Chinese to foreigners; use the method of information investigation andcomparative analysis, choosing all the letter-words in160teaching materials, and make adetail description and comparative analysis to them both from synchronic and diachronicangle. We aim at pointing out the existing problems of the letter-words in the materials andmaking certain suggestions and principles to solve the problems, promoting the teachingmaterials in theory and the teaching in practice.This article contains four chapters: chapter one introduction, commenting the presentresearch on vocabulary and letter-words in teaching materials, introducing the target andmeaning of our research, introducing the theory and method, introducing the materials wechose.Chapter two: examining the letter-words in the teaching materials, giving a briefintroduction of examining progress and overall situation, giving detail descriptions ofsynchronic and diachronic angles, including different lesson types, different levels, anddifferent periods.Chapter three: the feature of the letter-words and the reasons that materials absorbletter-words, analyzing the letter-words features from morphology, semantics, grammar andpragmatics. The reasons why materials absorb letter-words including the effect from socialtimes, the change of pragmatic psychology, the tendency of language integration and thefeatures of letter-words.Chapter four: the existing problems and suggestions, the problems including the choiceof words, the morphology problems, pronunciation problems and commentary problems.Giving principles of being strict, necessary and small quantity, and normative.
