Shanghai College of Fine Arts was founded on the eve of the New Culture Movement, it originated the new art education and took an important role in the20th century Chinese Art History. From1912to1927, Shanghai College of Fine Arts accelerated its development in this fifteen years. The School matured its organization improved its curriculum therefore its influence grew up to lead the trendy art education in China.This period was taken as the research object for this thesis, which used a large quantity of raw materials from Shanghai Library and Shanghai Archives introduced the cross-cultural communication theory, as well as tried to elaborate and analyze the development process and the significance of this period. The content was mainly consisted of two parts. First, as an entry point to the special perspective of the media reported, the thesis combed Shanghai College of Fine Arts’s recruit, curriculum, organizational structure, management systems, teacher development, exhibition of achievements, social evaluation, students’protests and the famous Model Event. Through this Shanghai College of Fine Arts in the complex and changeable era was investigated, from the grassroots to the standardization, institutionalization, characteristic and modernization according to the founders’ideal. Second, The thesis took a open view of history to censor and construct the early development of Shanghai College of Fine Arts from three aspects:Western Cultural exchanged traditional painting, the unique regional and cultural characteristics of Shanghai and Chinese modern economic social changes, expounding its pioneer position and significance in the Chinese Art Education History. The full thesis was consisted of five parts:the Foreword, the early process, the Model Event, the historical thinking of Shanghai College of Fine Arts’s development and the Conclusion.Shanghai College of Fine Arts is the product of Chinese and Western cultural exchanges, the development of Western painting and New Art Movement. Nowadays, the trend of globalization, the fusion impact of the geographical civilization will certainly continue to expand in new ways. Hence to explore Chinese art by a trajectory of evolution, and to summarize the beneficial practices and successful experience of Shanghai College of Fine Arts will undoubtedly render a profound inspiration for the trend of the world as well as the development of contemporary Chinese Art Education.
