Hu qiuyuan lives in an age called "where China heads to?". He reflects the advantages and disadvantages of plans put forward by the Westernization faction, the traditional school and the Russification faction which solve the culture crisis of China. To the1960s,, he formed his own thought of culture. On the basis of soting Hu’s thought of culture in a systematical way, this thesis analyzes it from the aspect of the theory of transcendence and advance and May Fourth Movement, and discusses the meaning of Hu’s thought of culture to China’s cultural rejuvenation.Hu qiuyuan emphasizes that the difficulties in rejuvenating culture in Chinese modern times is that it meets with the "double crisis in culture". The so-called "double crisis in culture" refers to the culture crisis of both China and the west. The main cause for the culture crisis in China is the backward science and technology while the main cause for the latter is the result of the over-expansion of instrumental rationality. Starting from the origin of "double crisis in culture", Hu dates back to history and finds out the crucial reason for culture crisis of China. Meanwhile, he analyzes the gains and loses of the plans in dealing with culture crisis of modern times in details in an extremely rational attitude, holds a critical attitude in the weakness of the Westernization faction, the traditional school and the Russification faction and the eclecticism, and points out the outlet for Chinese culture is to create its own culture."May Fourth Movement" is a must in analyzing the culture crisis of China. Hu analyzes the New Literature Movement, New Culture Movement and May Fourth Movement one by one. From the aspect of nation rejuvenation, he compares the culture of China in modern time with the classical culture of Germany in late18th and early19th. In his eyes, the rejuvenation in Germany is mainly due to the effort from the scholars. Unlike the situation in Germany, China failed in the May Fourth Movement. The reason for the failure is that the leaders of the New Culture Movement were weak in literature, thus they were not able to shoulder the responsibility. More importantly, the division in the inner thought and the changes in the outer environment shorten the time. As for the scientifical methods put forward by Hu Shi, Hu does not agree, and brings up his own scientific method. The core of Hu’s cultural thought theory lies in its cultural theory and historical philosophy. He regards culture as the produce of inner construction and outer environment formed by technology, system and academics. His "Theoretical history" mainly consists of methodology of historical studies and value judgments. All in all, Hu’s thoughts of culture is an excellent annotation of the culture of China in modern time, which is of great importance in the history of Chinese thought.
