| Translation equivalence is originally used as criteria for principle of machine translationand later Nida put forth dynamic and functional equivalences. It seems that every aspect oflanguage has been discussed by means of translation equivalence until cognitive linguistics hasbeen introduced in.Cognitive process, demonstrating key principle of cognitive linguistics, constitutes embodiedexperience, image schema, category, concept and meaning. Translation equivalence focuses onmeaning and the forms of language, and cognitive process draws its attention on sections ahead ofmeaning of SL and TL (mainly Chinese and English) to find out possibility of equivalence andaccuracy of closeness at the first place.Cognitive linguistics changes the foundation of traditional views of philosophy and puts forththe view that everything people know about the outside world comes from embodied experiencesby their bodies and unconsciously organization in the mind. It makes a path from reality tolanguage through cognitive process and gives a hint that what comes into meaning beforeequivalence is forced upon form and meaning of language. By the cognitive process, people formlanguage of their own with geographical merits in space and cultural features over time see thingsdifferently which means different places put people in the condition of different reality andinteraction with these differences produces different culture. However, surveys of cognitivescience reveal that humans are one specie with same sensitive organs and brain functions. And thesame organs and brains are host of cognitive process which as expected would make a differencein translation equivalence or at least tell the truth of accuracy of closeness between procedure ofdecoding ST and encoding its translated version.Therefore, translators would not firstly pick out the equivalent of SL in TL but trace back tohow the painting is drawn by the sender and try to paint it again in TL with equivalence orcloseness of cognitive process. |
