Abstract/Summary:
SciTech communication between our country and foreign countries has far-reaching influences on the China’s SciTech development, which requires feasible translation quality evaluation. Traditional translation quality assessment (TQA) models, Williams thinks, are inclined to be academic and macro with weak operability. We base our study on Williams’Argumentation-centered TQA model, for it is a quantitative method, taking not only macro level but also micro aspects into account. It sets evaluation parameters and corresponding weights for "argumentation-centered texts", providing evaluators with workable and practical assessment method. The other advantage of this model lies in its variability of the parameters concerning the types of texts.Maintaining the four core parameters included in Williams’model—Argument Schema, Argument, Propositional functions/conjunctives/other inference indicators, Narrative Strategy—this research incorporates another two parameters according to the features of SciTech texts,"Terminology" and "Target Language Quality", for terminology, according to Newmark. usually accounts for about5%-10%of a SciTech text, and as a vital linguistic activity, translation should take the specific language features of SciTech texts into great consideration. After tentatively revising Williams’evaluation parameters, their corresponding weights are also reassigned via Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in Statistics, so that making the model more scientific and objective. The modified model is then applied into the assessment of fifty C-E translations of SciTech texts. The findings are:(1) Concerning the micro structure, most of the translations successfully keep the complete "Argument Schema" of the source texts; the inadequacy in the translation of "Claim" and "Ground", two essential elements in an argumentative schema, are the main factors affects the translation quality of some versions;(2) The dissatisfaction of terminology translations are caused by either using common words, or omitting the translation of technical terms;(3) Language failures are mostly caused by consistency violation of pronouns and plurality, preposition misusing, tense misusing and sentence structure mess.
