A quantifier is a word which indicates the unit of measurement. Itsgeneral meaning is expressing the unit of a person, a thing, or an action.Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan that has a variety of quantifiers, whichmakes it distinctive from the Indo-European. As a particular part of speech, thequantifiers possess a certain part in all the language families except theIndo-European. However, they are not as complicated, systematic andcomprehensive as in Chinese. Quantifier teaching in Teaching Chinese as aForeign Language (TCFL) has always been a difficulty for learners, especiallyfor the learners whose language families are different from Chinese. Scholarsat home have been studying on the quantifier teaching and achieve greatgoals. Quantifiers in modern Chinese originated from ancient Chinese, andmost of them are grammaticalized from other parts of speech----quantifier of around thing called “Ke”, and long things named “Tiao” both have their reasons. This study tends to get to the root of some common quantifiers, discuss aboutthe features the rules of their usage, and help foreign learners understand andstudy Chinese from a different perspective.Ancient Chinese were recorded by characters. Chinese is ideographic, that is, the character pattern indicates its word meaning to some extent.Source-quantifiers in Chinese which have a long history, are limited in quantityand used in at high frequency. Most of them are related to their own wordmeanings. Learning the motivation and rules of usage through characterpatterns, though tortuous, can yet be regarded as an interesting method, andhas some reference value. This study spreads mainly from the author’s teaching of quantifiers inKorea. It recorded some teaching experiences and teaching methodsappropriate to Korean learners, and the possibility of carrying out teachingChinese quantifiers from motivation in Korea; it analyses some mistakes inusual quantifier teaching; also, to help teachers teaching quantifiersconveniently, the author analyzes59common quantifiers in Chinese LevelStandard and Grammar Level Syllabus. The author discusses about thefunctions of justification in Chinese quantifiers in TCFL, and reaches someachievements: the effectiveness of acquiring some quantifiers can beimproved through teaching from the perspective of justification.
