In Chinese painting, line is an important language sign. It is also the mostimportant expressing method.As a prominent language sign in Chinese painting, in the prehistory age and at thebeginning of civilization, line plays the same role in both the eastern and the western.This is because line is the most direct and simple expressing sign as a kind of paintingmethod. It is also different in civilization development between the eastern and thewestern. Western painting develops towards the three-dimensional direction, whichslowly gives up this initial modeling approach. While Chinese painting doesn’t giveup the main shape means “line”, and develops expressing method of line based on itsown cultural features.Proceed from the origin and development of line in traditional painting, thisthesis makes analysis and research through line’s function, sense of beauty andexpressing way. Combined my own feeling of creation and practice, this thesisexplains the important role and far-reaching influence that line plays in traditionalpainting from the angle of ontology language of line.This thesis consists of four chapters to analyze line. Chapter one mainlynarrates the development process from the angle of the origin of line and developmentof line. It broadly separated into four phases: Qin and Han period, Sui and Tangdynasties, Song and Yuan dynasties, and Ming and Qing dynasties. In this chapter, italso makes simply narration on “line” in the above each period, and then artisticfeatures in each period are gained. Chapter two gives special emphasis on the functionof line in Chinese traditional painting, which gives first place on“line modeling”research and second place on graphology and emotionality. Chapter three mainlyshows the line’s sense of beauty in traditional painting through differentunderstanding and study to paintings, namely, namely, formal beauty, rhythmic beauty,and decorative beauty. Finally, chapter four analyzes line’s influence on contemporary painting in the way of appreciation to contemporary paintings combined artisticfeatures of line in traditional painting.
