Based on the multimedia teaching theories, theories about teaching Chinese as a foreign language and existing researches on motivation factors, this paper carries out a preliminary investigation into the effects of the use of multimedia teaching activities on the three main motivation factors:students’ interest in learning, self-efficacy and self-confidence in Chinese teaching in Thailand. The paper first offers a comprehension review of the advantages and disadvantages of multimedia teaching activities and the present situation and development of Chinese teaching and the use of multimedia teaching activities in Thailand. The author chooses three course in Mahasarakham University and uses classroom observation, interviews and questionnaire surveys to observe and collect data. The author uses the predesigned classroom observation sheets and record tables when observing the three different courses. By analysing the data collected from each course, this paper tries to find out the common ground of the three courses and investigates the effectiveness in the use of multimedia in teaching, and to analyze the impact of multimedia teaching activities on the three major learning motivation factors.The author also interviewed two teachers from China face to face and conducted a questionnaire interview with a Thai teacher about the use of multimedia teaching. In order to understand students’ thoughts and opinions about multimedia teaching, the author carried out a questionnaire survey among the freshmen and sophomores. The author also used the students’ learning results to prove the conclusions obtained in this paper. Based on the findings of the present study, the paper puts forward some suggests on the use of multimedia teaching activities in Chinese teaching in Thailand. It is hoped that this paper will help to improve the effectiveness in the use of multimedia in Chinese teaching in Thailand.
