A Report On The Translation Of The Economist

The Economist is a time-honored and world-renowned English journal, which wields extensive and profound influence not only in the international financial and economic circles, but also among global politicians and scholars. Translating essays in The Economist into Chinese is not only conducive to the improvement of individual English ability, but also necessary and significant for Chinese people to visualize the image of Chinese nation abroad and to broaden their international horizon. The report is an analysis based on the author’s translation practice of participating in an online translating project on The Economist. By summarizing the writing style and prominent features in linguistic aspect, content and viewpoint tendency of essays in The Economist, major bottlenecks for translation are revealed with typical examples excerpted from original texts of The Economist. And utilizing relevant translation theories and based on the experience accumulated with time, three basic principles for translation are summarized and verified in the process of exploring the best way to break through those bottlenecks. The analysis is exemplified by comparative studies of corresponding translation samples. The three translation principles are "fidelity in cultural information","reader-orientation" and "veracity and accuracy" respectively.
