Pun is a traditional figure of speech which has a long history. No matter in ancient times or modern times, in written work or oral language, pun is frequently used. Nowadays, due to its special rhetorical and pragmatical effect, pun is widely used in advertising, messages, network, sketch and ballads. Pun becomes very popular.Because of the single perspective or the old material of the previous research, This paper focuses on the latest material(including proverbs, sketches, Ads, etc), and chooses different perspectives(including cognitive linguistics,pragmatics,contrastive linguistics) to explore Chinese pun. The main content of this paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction. Lead by a series of the latest and hottest pun in recent years, the paper introduces pun including development, definition and classification, characteristics and function, production and application.The second chapter focuses on the cognitive interpretation of pun. We use Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory to analyze the cognitive process of pun and different types of pun proverbs.The third chapter focuses on the pragmatical interpretation of pun. We use Speech Act Theory, Cooperative Principle and Relevance Theory to analyze the pragmatical effect of pun and different types of pun sketches.The fourth chapter focuses on the comparison of English pun and Chinese pun. We use Contrastive Theory to tell the difference between English pun advertisements and Chinese pun advertisements.The fifth chapter is a conclusion which summarizes the text and points out the shortages in this paper.
