Qin Slips at Yuelu Academy Vol.I is a part of Qin Slips collection, which is bought from Hong Kong by Yuelu Academy of Hunan University. It consists of over290slips in total, including three literatures, i.e., Zhi Ri, Wei Li Zhi Guan Ji Qian Shou, and Zhan Meng Shu. This part of the slips transcripted in the late Warring States and the earlier Qin Dynasty is stole and excavated from grave, and purchased after flowing to the cultural relics market.The current research on Qin Slips at Yuelu Academy Vol. I is divided into the four-folds:exploring contents and nature of the text; explaining characters and supplementing notes; relating to contents of bamboo slips; studying on history, geography and other related aspects.The bamboo slips and silk literature is important material for the study of characters. This part of the bamboo is written in ancient official script. It contributes to our recognition of the writing of characters in Qin period. It includes a large number of folk characters and variant forms, which is conducive to our understanding of all characters in Qin bamboo slips.This thesis mainly contains three parts:The first part is the study of character variants. It defines character variants and distinguishes between character variants and folk characters, proposing theories and methods for collating character variants. Compared with other Qin bamboo slips, the present thesis makes investigation and analysis of character variants in Qin Slips at Yuelu Academy Vol. I. Finally, it discusses uses of all characters in Qin bamboo slips.The second part is the study of font. It discusses the definition of font and differences between font and chirography, and defines the font in Qin Slips at Yuelu Academy Vol. I. On the basis of comparison between bronze inscriptions and stone inscriptions of Qin Dynasty in the period of Spring and Autumn and Warring States, this thesis discusses the origin and development of the official script. Finally, it analyzes external factors influencing the development of font.The third part is about the layout of characters. It makes a comprehensive collation of characters in Qin Slips at Yuelu Academy Vol. I. Selected samples are in accordance with the full size version, aiming to keep the original appearance. There are four hundred eighty-five single-words in total, one compound graph and six characters in doubt. Besides, the first character of single-words is ordered according to Xu Xuan’s edition of Shuo Wen.
