Iran is a great power in the western part of Asia which was called "the Crossroads of the Eurasian Continent" from ancient times. The culture of Iran has being deeply influenced by geographical location, becoming one of the well-known civilized countries in the world from the accumulating of the thousand-of-year civilization. There’re multitudes of ethnic groups here and it is nature that they have their own manners and customs which is different from others’. During the developmental process of Iranian history, following every national unity there would be various strategies of ruling the country, however, they shared the similarity, that is, the rulers all have had the idea that maintaining the whole nation under the language-policy control.The history of Iranian language policy could be generally divided into three stages—the stage before Islamization, from7th to early20th century AD and up to now. At the first stage, the country created splendid culture under the policy of the Persia’s government, that is, Farsi based with other languages complementary. From7th Century, Iran began a process of Islamization and finally finished it in the11th century. There were some changes in religious politics within the period and due to this reason, Farsi was started to assimilate Arabic words and widened the speaking range, which made Arabic has played a significant part in religious politics instead of staying being a loanword. Build upon the basis of Arabic alphabet, vocabulary as well as grammar, a new language called "Persian" has been born. Iranian history in20th century concludes the end of Qajar Dynasty, Pahlavi Dynasty and Islamic Republic of Iran. During the Pahlavi Period, the government managed to carry out a language policy from top down at the background of modernization reform, aimed to make sure the purity of Persian, eliminating the borrowed words within its development; at the same time, a kind of culture chauvinism as well as assimilation has been put into practice. At the time of Islamic Republic of Iran, the government replaced all measures that former dynasty pushed with the language policy with Islamic tone. In spite of this, in the process of policy implementation, the government was operating a measure, under which they wanted it to be as inclusive as possible while Persia was still kept to be the official language. Besides, English was given the priority in foreign language studying.The changes in language policies of Iran have different features in different periods due to the needs of politics, economic, as well as culture. Generally speaking, they’re all based on the country needs without the reference of Chauvinism or compatibility. The thesis has summed up to summarize the characteristics of several languages of official policy, minority, religion and foreign teaching in modern Iran, finally draw conclusion which could be credible after the analysis and summary during the procedure of language policy forming in Iran.
