As China’s Internet penetration rate is growing and Internet users havebeen expanding, Internet is becoming an integral part of people’s lives.Internet words’ influence will continue to enhance, and some of internetwords have even become common words of everyday life, so that researchon the ontology of Internet words gradually draws attention. However, in thearea of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Internet words have not beenpaid sufficient attention.In view of this situation, this paper focused on Internet words inteaching Chinese as a foreign language. This body of this paper defined theconcepts of Internet words, from both broad and narrow definition, andclassified Internet words from the perspective of formation of differentreasons. Through questionnaires and analysis of the summarized researchmethods, this paper investigated the impacts of Internet words on foreignstudents while learning Chinese, and the selection of Internet words intextbooks in recent years.Through these methods, this paper finds that foreign students’comprehensiveness of Internet words increases significantly as the growthof their time in China. The research also verified the correlation between thecomprehensiveness of Internet words and the age of students: youngerstudents tend to obtain higher degree of understanding of Internet words.Besides, the extent of foreign students’ compre-hendsiveness towardsInternet words showed significant disparity: their comprehensive towardshomophonic class and abbreviations Internet words is significantly better.Due to the continuous expansion of the influence of Internet words, moreand more Internet words appeared in textbooks in recent years. However,despite the number of Internet words in Chinese as a foreign language textbooks growing network words, the proportion of Internet words is stillminimal. Internet words appeared in the textbook are mostly computernetwork jargon, but those high-frequency used words were usually notincluded in textbooks of Chinese as a foreign Language.According to these surveys, this paper believes that appropriate amountof Internet words in teaching Chinese as a foreign language is necessary.This is determined by both the status of Internet words in the currentChinese Communication and the impacts of teaching Chinese as a foreignlanguage. However, due to the arbitrariness and instability of Internet words,not all networks are suitable to be introduced into the vocabulary of Chineseas a Foreign Language. This article also proposed a framework of how toselect the appropriate network words; and advocated to choose Internetwords which are stable, strong, widely used, do not destroy the grammarprinciple of network words. Researchers should also avoid the adverseeffects of the wrong class and homophonic class on learners, and payattention on the methods of teaching in order to promote positive effects ofChinese as a foreign language.
