This dissertation is based on a literature phenomenon in Mid-Ming that Sanqu works (?)ed "self-descnplion" appeared in large numbers. Taking it as a starting point, it’s going to study on the characteristics of this kind of Sanqu works from both the text and the writing motion, intends to tell die reasons and impact of it in the view of cultural studies. As for die methodology, this dissertation will choose three literatures--CHEN Duo, KANG Hai and LI Kaixian--whose active periods are ordered in different ages in Mid-Ming, and focuses on exploring their similarities rather than comparing their personalities, and therefore it doesn’t discuss dieir works separately, otherwise it is necessary to point out the distinguish. The whole paper has divided into three parts, aims at solving three sub-problems as below. The first chapter reveals how and why came to die renaissance of Sanqu works being as a style of literature instead of the folk songs in a micro view, and dying to figure out the different concepts of Sanqu works at different periods in die middle age of Ming dynasty by a glimpse of die biographies of die three litterateurs and die spreading of their works. In this way, it explains why the litterateurs in the Middle Ming start to take Sanqu as a method of describing themselves spontaneously. For die second chapter, it tries to discover die new features of Ming Sanqu in two aspects:one is the inter-conversion between the elegance and vulgarness in the phraseology, simultaneously, die nobility and sccularity in die psychology; the other is a connection between die unique self-description and the literary genre of Sanqu. All of the analyses are based on the Sanqu text. And in the last part, it concentrates in elaborating what is the self figure like in the Sanqu works. Meanwhile, how the "self-description" convey the personal awareness. The key study is on the recollection of their past the and the remembrances of the whole history, which leads to a conclusion that their expectations to their current life and their future are all based on "the past",with the ignoring of the present. This performance suggested that they want to be a "person" free from the responsibilities and the shackles of the identity of the "intellectual", and to be able to make their own as individual people, rather than the social individuals.
