Since the Ministry of Education enacted"College English Curriculum Requirements"in Jan. 2nd, 2004, 180 universities and colleges adopted the new teaching mode in accordance with their own characteristics and realities. In retrospect, College English Teaching (CET hereafter) has made steady progress by reforming its teaching methods and materials through the efforts of English teachers and students under the teaching guidelines of the Ministry of Education. However, there are still some problems, which should not be ignored. The present paper attempts to probe into the reform and summarizes the achievements and problems of CET reform in four trial universities (Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology and China University of Geosciences) in Hubei Province. The author adopts three research methods----questionnaire, classroom observation and interview----so as to get a better understanding of the status quo of CET reform in Hubei Province. In addition, the author tries to compare the achievements and problems of CET and then gets the implications from the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The analysis of CET reform in present research is conducted in five aspects: curriculum design, teaching mode, teaching methods, teaching media, evaluation and English teachers'qualifications. The present research aims at promoting college English reform, implementing the guidelines of suiting the instruction to the student's level so as to cater to current needs of collaborative, modularized, hypertextualized, networked education and individualized education. The present analysis provides the Ministry of Education with objective evaluation as well as brings forward concrete feedback about the procedures of CET reform in those appointed trial universities in Hubei Province. The implications the author concludes from research results will bring forth useful references to publicize and promote teaching modes of CET.
