This is a translation report on Modern China by RanaMitter, of which Chapter3is the source text. The whole picture of China’s politics and economy from the early20thcentury and the21th century is the main contents of the source text. The maincontents of this report are divided into four parts: Part One is the translation projectdescription, including project background, objectives and significance. Part Two is thebackground of the source text, including the author introduction and relatedinformation, main contents of the source text, linguistic features of the source text,and evaluation and review of the source text. Part Three is about translationdifficulties and methods. The difficulties lie in the translation of the accurate Chinesenames of historicfigures, official titles events and our party’s principles or history atdifferent phases The methods include: free translation, back translation, conversionand supplementation. Part Four concludes with the lessons, interpretive theory andunsolved problems in the translation project: maximizing the transfer of the messagein source text is the most important principle; to achieve good translation needs asolid linguistic foundation. The translator must master the similarities and differencesbetween two languages; being close to the source text at each level and focusing onthe transfer of equivalent effect are of great significance in translation.
