A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of Tourist Guide To Around China: Yunnan(Excerpts)

The booming of international exchanges and economic trades alleviates the importance of the tourist industry,which makes the translation of tourist guides necessary.As a convenient material especially for new comers,a tourist guide is designed to provide relevant information to tourists,and ultimately to achieve the purpose of “induce”,that is,to make tourists get used to a new place as soon as possible.However,high-qualitied tourist guides remain rare in the current market.Therefore,this thesis seeks to improve the accuracy of translation in tourist guides by exploring better and more appropriate translation methods under the guidance of the functionalist theories.Also it will refer to some unique linguistic characteristics in traditional tourist guides.This thesis describes the task and process of this paper.The author believes that the translator should give full consideration to the acceptability of the translation and the target audience under the guidance of Skopos theory.The translator should combine the functions with purposes of tourist guide.According to the linguistic features of a tourist guide,the translator has to use flexible translation methods to make a certain extent on the content and format of the original break.This article firstly gives an overview of the Skopos theory,then it analyzes the linguistic features of a tour guide from three aspects: lexical,syntactical and rhetorical.Afterwards,the thesis puts forward four methods of tourist guide translation: literal translation,addition,adaptation and deletion.Through the case study,the author draws a conclusion that the Skopos theory can be used as guiding principles for translating a tourist guide.In the process of translating a tourist guide,the translator should always keep the translation function and purpose in mind.From the readers' point of view,the author should use the appropriate translation methods to achieve the intended purpose.
