To meet the requirement of China’s fast-growing development in a wider variety offoreign fields and the increasing demand for interpreters, the interpretation teaching andthe cultivation of qualified interpreters have been attached to high importance. While, withthe further development of corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics, the study of L2“prefabricated chunk” has attracted more and more attention of the field of secondlanguage acquisition, this new perspective of L2prefabricated chucks promotes studies ontheories and practice of interpreting. The thesis summarizes and analyses related researches on L2prefabricated chunkacquisition and the study combining interpreting and prefabricated chunk by reviewingliterature, based on the theory of prefabricated chunk, then, the thesis puts forward aquestion on the correlation between the usage of L2prefabricated chunk in interpreting andthe overall quality of the interpretation, with regard to the beginners in interpreting.Twenty-nine beginners in interpreting were the subjects of this empirical research andthe interpretation of their tests in a C-E consecutive interpreting were recorded andcollected as samples. The standard frequency of using chunks and the indices used foraccessing the quality of interpreting (speech rate; phonation/time ratio; average length ofpause; total number of repairs; ratio of interpreted T-units; ratio of error-free informationunits) were calculated by the author with the help of professional sound analyzingsoftware-Adobe Audition. Though the software-SPSS, the correlation analyses betweenthe related data were carried out and the result shows that the correlation between thefrequency of using prefabricated chunks and the expressiveness and the loyalty of theinterpreting both are positive. The final score of the interpretation for each sample werecalculated then, through transforming the raw data into the standard score T-score. Thecorrelation analyses between the final standard score of the interpretation and the standardfrequency of using chunks was carried out and the result shows that for the beginners ininterpreting, the more frequently they use the prefabricated chunks when they dointerpreting, the higher quality their interpretation will be.The thesis is divided into seven chapters. Chapter One is the introduction, where thebackground, significance and research method are described. Chapter Two is literaturereview on studies on L2prefabricated chunk acquisition and related studies combiningprefabricated chunks with translation. Chapter Three is on theory of prefabricated chunk and related concepts concerning cognitive memory, as well as quality assessment standardsof interpretation, are defined. Chapter Four is the introduction of the research methodologyincluding the research purpose, hypothesis, participants, method, procedures, definition ofthe variables and the methods of data collection and analysis. Chapter Five is data analysisafter which the hypothesis is verified. Chapter Six is the research result and the analysis ofthat and related suggestions. The last chapter contains conclusion, research constraints andthe prospect of further related researches.
