In this report, the author conducted liaison interpretation for Jilin Universityinternational communication office in an effort to promote scholarly exchanges anddrum up student exchanges between Jilin University and BISC, Bader InternationalStudy Center, Queen s University, Canada. As the liaison interpreter, the author hassummarized the problems aroused during the interpreting process and made a generalcomparison between the quality of her performance and that of a veteran interpreterbased on her own personal experience. The author wises to learn from the mistakesand preclude the same mistakes in future conductions and thus improve the overallquality and performance on the part of the interpreter.Based on the personal experience as the liaison interpreter, this paper centers oninterpreting task which includes nine script translation, one treaty translation and aconversation interpreting. The paper can be divided into4parts, namely part one: taskdescription, which gives a precise introduction of the whole task and a conciseintroduction of the general background of international communications of JilinUniversity; part two: preliminary preparations of the interpreting task, which includesthe investigation of background information of the visiting scholars and internetstudies of relevant background of interpreting and the task; part three: acomprehensive introduction of the standards of liaison interpreting, which includesthe physical strength as well as mental fitness a professional is supposed to possessand other basic requirements concerning rapid response and quick understanding aswell as a wide range of background knowledge, all of which laid a sound foundationfor the following part, which, based on the standards, assesses the interpreting taskand gives ways to improve including avoidance of redundant words, the accumulationof comprehensive background knowledge and language proficiency training.It is also the author s wish to provide references for other interpreters and thusenhancing the general quality and performance level. |
