With the continuous development of globalization and the further rise of China’s international status, more and more foreigners want to know more about China. Chinese news, especially Chinese soft news, which epitomizes the current situation and the development trend of China’s economy, social life, and culture and so on, is an important window for the foreigners to know more about China. This, consequently, calls forth the C-E translation of Chinese soft news and justifies the increasing attention for the C-E translation of Chinese soft news. Under such circumstance, the author, who took part in the CCTV Soft News C-E Translation Project from December,2011, is fully aware of the importance of the C-E translation of Chinese soft news and the responsibility as a translator to convey the Chinese soft news to foreigners.During the CCTV translation practice, it was found out that the draft translation and the revised version were different in many aspects. After comparing the two versions, the author came to the conclusion that "absolute equivalence" was not feasible in soft news translation. Therefore, a more feasible evaluation standard for C-E soft news translation is of significance and necessity. To meet this requirement, the author compared and summarized the differences between the draft version and the revised version. Based on comparing the two versions, it was figured out that soft news translation would be target reader-oriented translation. To provide a theoretical foundation for this finding, the author made use of the functional theory to justify the target reader-oriented translation. To realize the target reader-oriented translation, first, an exploratory analysis of translation problems on the part of target readers was carried out in terms of their different expectations for the soft news, their lack of Chinese cultural background knowledge and their requirement for English journalistic language conventions; Second, a tentative analysis was conducted to apply target reader-oriented translation to C-E soft news translation practice by solving the translation problems exhibited. Limitations and suggestions were finally provided.
