A Report On Translating Soft News For Huanqiu Website From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This paper is a translation practice report.The materials belong to English soft news coming from social news channel,Huanqiu website.To highlight the feature of soft news,Huanqiu website requires translators to trans-edit the materials when necessary.Characterized by lively writing style and interesting contents,soft news aims to offer readers the latest news all around the world.To highlight this feature,the translator needs to give her subjectivity a full play.Skopos theory lays a solid theoretical foundation for the translator's subjectivity.Skopos theory holds that the original text is not the absolute principle in translation process.The translator can decide which part he is going to translate and what translation strategies he is about to use according to different purposes.In this manner,the subjectivity and creativity of the translator are allowed.Therefore,the translator chooses the three rules of skopos theory as the guidance of her trans-editing practice.In this report,the translator will elaborate the skopos theory's guiding significance to the trans-editing of soft news with specific cases.Complying with the requirements of the client,the translator intends to output qualified news that suit Chinese readers.According to skopos rule,the translator applies figure of speech in headline to make the finishing points;the translator respectively adds modifiers and remarks in leads as well as in main bodies to arouse readers' resonance;in the processing of neologism,the translator adopts coinage and fuzzy translation strategy to suit Chinese readers.Conforming to coherence rule,the translator utilizes free translation strategy to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation;the translator adjusts the order of the original sentences and deletes negligible information when necessary.Adhering to fidelity rule,the translator reserves some necessary information and translates them precisely to make translated texts faithful to the original.There are four parts in this report.The first part describes the source of translation material and background information of the news texts.The second part elaborates the translation process and introduces the theoretical basis of trans-editing.The third part is the essence of the report.In this part,the translator analyzes translation strategies and methods used in trans-editing practice with specific cases from four dimensions: trans-editing of headlines,soft leads,the main body and textual details.The final part is a summary of the translator's translation practice.The author sums up the experience harvested in the course of trans-editing English soft news,and lists several goals the translator should continue pursuing in the course of trans-editing.Through this report,the translator hopes to supply other soft news trans-editors with some references.
