Zenghou Yi musical instruments have been unearthed for over30years. During this period, many scholars conducted a comprehensive in-depth study and achieved splendid results. The inscriptions on Zenghou Yi musical instruments are not only the precious materials for researching ancient music culture, but also a wealth of valuable materials for researching ancient Chinese characters. Consequently, many scholars have focused on studying these inscriptions and have already achieved abundant results. Their work mainly concentrates on the discussion about the age of the tomb’s master, the explanations of the ancient Chinese characters and the interpretations of the epigraphs’content.This article focuses on studying the explanations of the ancient Chinese characters and the interpretations of the epigraphs’content, which includes several aspects as follows:Chapter One:Introduction. This chapter briefly introduces the excavation status of Zenghou Yi musical instruments and reviews the research status of the inscriptions on Zenghou Yi musical instruments. Then we show the significance of the selected topic and introduce the main research methods in this article.Chapter Two:The interpretations of inscriptions on Zenghou Yi musical instruments. This is the main part of this article. We collect and quote different scholars’ views on the inscriptions of Zenghou Yi musical instruments, which mainly discuss the interpretations of those ancient Chinese characters. For each item, we list each scholar’s interpretations according to time, and behind each scholar’s interpretations is my comment. The interpretations include two parts:one is the interpretations of the inscriptions on Zenghou Yi chime and the other is the interpretations of the inscriptions on Zenghou Yi stone-chime. Behind them are the original inscriptions on the pendants of Zenghou Yi chime and the inscriptions on Zenghou Yi stone-chime box respectively. And the related studies are shown with the form of the collection of interpretations. Chapter Three:Conclusion. We hope our collections of the interpretations of those inscriptions can provide convenience for other researchers and our comments can be used for future reference.
