Language and culture has a very close relationship,they influence each other aswell as promote each other,this has become a generally acceptedview.Nowadays,China has formed a special discipline called cultural linguistics,thereare also a variety of monographs published.In a language,the thing that can mostembodies the language culture is vocabulary,especially the long used idioms.Since itsshortness, forcefulness and vividness, Chinese idioms are popular with Chinesepeople. And the origination of them and the history of their usage have determinedconventions in their usage, stability in structure and richness in connation. Besides,they have also formed the inseparable relationship between idioms and Chineseculture. Hence, the introduction of the cultural information involved in idioms hasbecome the indispensible part of those dictionaries of Chinese idioms, particularlythose study-oriented ones. Now,there some articles that discuss the relation betweendictionary and culture,but not so much.Study-oriented dictionaries of Chinese idiomshave been taken as the object of the study in this paper which Middle School StudentOriented Dictionary of Chinese Idioms and Dictionary of Chinese Idioms publishedby The Commercial Press are been analyzed from perspectives of macro-structure andmicrostructure. This paper aims to find rationalities and the inadequacy in them fromthe discussion of their modes of representation for cultural information involved inidioms. On this basis, this paper also puts forward proposals for latter lexicographersand users.The objective, significance and range, methodology of this study will beintroduced in the first chapter, the theoretic framework, and the relationship betweenidioms, culture and dictionariesof idioms will also be introduced in this chapter.The second chapter will contribute to the contrastive analysis of these twodictionaries from the perspective of cultural information in macro structure of them.And those aspects of cultural information in the dictionaries’ macro structures will bediscussed: lexical entries, prefaces and appendixes, especially those idioms withcultural characteristics.The contrastive analysis of cultural information in microstructures of these twodictionaries will be discussed in the third chapter. phonetic notation, explanation, the analysis will be performed from illustrative examples, and synonyms and antonyms,sentimental colors, especially the explanation of those idioms with culturalconnotation or origination of stories.Based on analysis in the third and fourth chapter, the rational mode for theintroduction of cultural information in study-oriented dictionaries will be presented inthis chapter, which lexical entry prefaces, appendix of macrostructure and explanation,illustrative examples, notation of culture, illustrations of microstructure will beinvolved.The importance and rationality in modes employed by dictionaries of idioms forintroducing cultural information will be concluded in the last chapter. Defaults ofthem will also presented in this chapter for the purpose of illuminating on furtherresearches.In short,there is a negligible relationship between the idiom,culture and idiomdictionary.If you want to make a good idiom dictionary,you must get to knownecessary culture information in idioms,especially those that influence people’sunderstanding and communicating.By the way,there are many ways for lexicographerto show cultural information in dictionary,so lexicographer could select from themaccording to their needs.
